Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Council for Science and Technology Policy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, explanations were given on the two reports, Priorities in Science and Technology Policy in 2008, and Outline of the FY2008 Budget related to Science and Technology. A case study, Technology to Fight Global Warming on the Consumer Front through Innovative Use of Energy: Ultra-efficient Heat Pump, was introduced as the latest development in the recent trend in science and technology.

In his address, Prime Minister Fukuda stated, "As I said in the latest policy speech, it is essential for Japan to maintain levels of technology that will exceed those of all other nations@in the face of intensifying global competition. Bearing in mind the importance of the all-nation effort to create innovative technologies, I would like to ask the Council to coordinate with the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy to advance the debate on establishing the Center for Creating Innovative Technology, with the aim of clarifying its orientation around this spring."

Furthermore, on the Council's efforts to address environmental issues, the Prime Minister said, "The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit will be held this July, which I regard as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate Japan's efforts in science and technology to the world. Fortunately, Japan is gifted with a lot of excellent technologies, especially in the field of energy conservation, which will lead to the reduction of greenhouse gases. In light of this, I would like the Council and other fora to advance discussions on innovation plans for environmental energy technology and further strengthen their efforts based on the plans."
