Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the Ministerial Meeting Concerning Measures Against Crime at the Diet building.

The meeting covered the countermeasures for organized crime and illegal use of firearms, including the response to the recent shotgun shooting incident that occurred in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The Ministers also discussed, from a broad perspective, other anti-crime efforts, including measures against money laundering and measures to prevent the participation by organized crime groups in public works.

Prime Minister Fukuda said, "It is the fundamental responsibility of the government to ensure the people have a safe environment in which to live, and a sense of security. In light of this, I am taking seriously the shotgun shooting murder case that took place in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture." He then instructed the Ministers in attendance to promptly consider further tightening of firearms regulations.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Fukuda instructed the Cabinet members to continue the implementation of the Action Plan for Realization of a Society Resistant to Crime, which, in 2008, will mark the fifth year of its formulation, and to consider medium- to long-term issues in view of the future of Japan's society.
