Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the general meeting of the Education Rebuilding Council at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
Discussion at the meeting was aimed toward the conclusion of the third report, and the Council members exchanged views on the framework of the report, including academic abilities (increased flexibility in the stipulation for school years ("6-3-3-4 system")), moral education and physical education, and university and graduate school reform.
Prime Minister Fukuda said, "'Self-reliance and mutual cooperation' is the catchphrase of the Cabinet. In advancing education reform, it is extremely important to ensure that each and every one of the children of our nation can nurture the spirit of 'self-reliance' through education, thereby developing their potential to the full and gaining strength to stand up against the various challenges that lay ahead of them. At the same time, we must ensure that education helps children develop the spirit of 'mutual cooperation,' through which they can express compassion and tenderness for others, and make a contribution to society."
