Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting with Mr. Emomali Rahmonov, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "Tajikistan, located right next to Afghanistan, is playing a crucial role for the stability of the entire regions of Central and South Asia. We are determined to further strengthen friendly and cooperative relations with Tajikistan." The Prime Minister then expressed his intention to continue extending Japan's assistance to Tajikistan's nation-building efforts toward democratization and market economy.

In response, President Rahmonov indicated his appreciation of Japan's assistance to date, and expectation for further cooperation from Japan in areas such as road development, school construction, and supply of medical equipment.

Furthermore, the two leaders agreed to continue to work closely together for promoting regional cooperation by the Central Asian countries, which is vital for the stability and development of the region, while advancing dialogue between the Central Asian countries and Japan.

In addition, Prime Minister Fukuda and President Rahmonov exchanged views on issues related to North Korea and climate change issues, among others.
