Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda received a report on the Basic Principles of FY2008 Budget Formulation.
The Prime Minister said, "The Basic Principles focus on the government's united efforts to enhance growth potential aimed at the realization of a country of hope and reassurance -- a goal that the current Cabinet is trying to achieve; thorough elimination of waste in expenditures that will become possible by firmly maintaining expenditure reforms; realization of an economic society with vitality; self-reliance and revitalization of the regions; and realization of a safe society in which the people can live their lives with a sense of security. The Basic Principles also set policies of well-modulated budget allocation. The government will proceed in the budget formulation for FY2008 based on the Basic Principles."
The Cabinet approved the Basic Principles on the following day, December 4.
