Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Headquarters for Promoting Decentralization Reform, composed of all Cabinet members, at the Diet building.
At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda received the midterm report, which was compiled on November 16, from Mr. Uichiro Niwa, the Chair of the Decentralization Reform Committee of experts. The main pillars of the report are the transfer of power from the central government to local governments, and the enhancement of local tax revenue sources.
Then, the Headquarters confirmed that it will pay maximum respect to the midterm report, and that it will give active support to the Committee's undertakings. Furthermore, the Headquarters will ensure that each of the ministries sincerely tackle decentralization reform under the guidance of the Committee, and that the government unites its efforts to promote decentralization reform with a sense of urgency.
