Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a Meeting of the Council for Science and Technology Policy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda and the council members evaluated research and development projects in areas of national importance promoted by the Council for Science and Technology Policy, and exchanged views on related matters such as the use of science and technology for revitalizing regions.

In his address, the Prime Minister said, "Scientific and technological advancement is the engine of Japan's economic policy, and is an exceptional category for which the government has been increasing budget allocations despite the tight financial situation. I would like to ask for more effective use of the budget in the future with a view to making Japan an advanced science- and technology-oriented nation." Then he said, "Regional revitalization is one of the Cabinet's most important policies, for which I would like to exert a unified effort incorporating various viewpoints. On the use of science and technology for revitalizing regions, I would like to work with the Unified Headquarters for the Regional Revitalization to immediately start what seems feasible now, while drawing up more specific strategies for the future."
