Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting with Mr. Nguyen Minh Triet, the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, who was on a State Visit to Japan, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to further expand the scope of their bilateral relations toward the formation of a strategic partnership, given the situation that Japan-Viet Nam relations are steadily developing, that Japan is making great contributions to the development of Viet Nam, and that Viet Nam is serving as an engine for regional economic growth.

After the meeting, the leaders signed the Joint Statement on the Deepening Relations between Japan and Vietnam that sets out the cooperation to be advanced in 44 wide-ranging areas.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his closing remarks of the joint press announcement that, "Japan and Viet Nam are enjoying unprecedented good relations in every area. Today's meeting was a great opportunity for us to reaffirm our intention to take advantage of President Triet's visit to Japan to deepen our relations further. I am convinced that Japan-Viet Nam relations will further develop."
