Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting with Mr. Kurmanbek Bakiev, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda conveyed to President Bakiev Japan's intention to continue supporting the Kyrgyz Republic's efforts toward the development of democracy and market economy. The Prime Minister also stated that Japan would focus on providing assistance in areas such as the provision of seminars for parliamentary members and training sessions for civil servants in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the development of human resources and transportation infrastructure. In response, the President indicated his determination to continue to vigorously promote the nation's efforts toward democratization and market economy, and expressed his appreciation of Japan's assistance.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to place emphasis on Japan-Kyrgyz bilateral relations and cooperation in United Nations reform and global warming countermeasures. Both leaders also agreed on the importance of the implementation of measures for denuclearization by North Korea and the early resolution of the abduction issue.

Following the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda and President Bakiev attended the signing ceremony for the Joint Statement on Friendship, Partnership and Cooperation in a New Era between Japan and the Kyrgyz Republic, which was followed by a joint press announcement.
