Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held the first Councilors' Meeting of the Headquarters for Ocean Policy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The Councilors' Meeting is convened so that councilors can discuss important items concerning ocean measures and give their opinions to the Prime Minister, who serves as the Chair of the Headquarters for Ocean Policy.

Prime Minister Fukuda said in his opening address, "Throughout the development of the nation, Japan has enjoyed a wide range of benefits from the oceans in terms of maritime resources and maritime transport. Therefore, an extremely important task for Japan is to protect and utilize the oceans to realize a safe and secure sea and ensure an abundance of maritime resources." The Prime Minister also said, "I am determined to see to it that the government will work as one to vigorously promote ocean policy." Prime Minister Fukuda thus called on each of the councilors to take part in active discussions at the meeting.
