Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda held a meeting of the Global Warming Prevention Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the meeting, the Headquarters decided on the basic policy for reviewing the Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan. The basic policy is aimed at the steady advancement of existing measures for making up the shortfall in the reduction required to achieve the target as well as the swift materialization of additional measures to be promoted in all sectors including industry, business, household and transportation. The basic policy will thereby contribute to revising the Achievement Plan within this fiscal year.
In his address, Prime Minister Fukuda said, "The global warming issue is a common global challenge that concerns the survival of humankind. It will be the major subject on the agenda of next year's G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit, and Japan will continue to take the lead in the world. As I mentioned in my policy speech yesterday, Japan possesses technologies in the environment and energy sectors that are worth boasting to the world about. I would ask the four ministers of the Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minister of the Environment, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and Minister for Foreign Affairs and other members of the Headquarters to advance their deliberations on Japan's international strategy for disseminating our technologies to the world and striking a balance between the environment and economy on a global scale." The Prime Minister thereby expressed his intention to strengthen measures to ensure the steady implementation of the existing measures and their further advancement, as well as to promptly advance deliberations on the details of additional measures.
