The purpose of this ceremony is to contribute to the creation of a prosperous and vibrant gender-equal society, by awarding those who, in many years, have made significant achievements in efforts such as the one to heighten momentum toward gender-equal society, and those who have contributed to the promotion of a gender-equal society through practical activities in various fields.
In the address, Prime Minister Aso said, "A gender-equal society cannot be realized through the government's efforts alone, nor can laws be implemented immediately after their enactment. The accumulation of activities in various fields, as well as personal connections and networks, are of extreme importance. I express once more my respect for the great achievements of those who have undertaken these activities over many years. The activities of the winners of the Women's Challenge Award also gave many women courage to take up the challenge of embarking upon new steps. I wish for the continuous health and success of the people awarded today."
Later, Prime Minister Aso presented the certificate of commendation to 12 winners of the Fiscal 2009 Prime Minister's Commendations to Contributors for the Promotion of a Gender-Equal Society. In response, Ms. Keiko Higuchi, on behalf of the award winners, said, "We are very honored and thankful to have received the award. It is thanks to the cooperation of people in the public and private sectors across the nation, and to the cooperation of men and women, that we were able to receive the award today. We will share the joy with our many friends and colleagues, and we are determined to continue our efforts."
