Prime Minister Taro Aso received the "Report on the Modality of the Basic Local Governments and Their Audit and Legislature Systems in the Future" from Mr. Yoshihiro Katayama, Vice-Chair of the Local Government System Research Council, at the Prime Minister's Office.

The report was compiled at the 4th general meeting of the 29th Local Government System Research Council (Prime Minister's advisory council chaired by Mr. Kunio Nakamura) convened in the morning. As a major pillar, the report states that the Grand Municipal Consolidation of the Heisei Era initiated by the central government since fiscal 1999 has produced a certain result in strengthening the administrative and fiscal basis of the local governments, and that the term of the existing Law for Exceptional Measures on Municipal Mergers will expire at the end of March next year.
