The joint statement was compiled by the science academies of the G8 member nations and the five other countries (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa) participating in the G8 Summit in Italy in July, as their recommendations to the national leaders of the participating countries. It was announced worldwide on the same day it was handed to Prime Minister Aso by Dr. Kanazawa.
The joint statement was compiled to reflect the scientists' opinions on "climate change and the transformation of energy technologies for a low carbon future," to be discussed in the G8 Summit. This time, it recommends that the governments of the G8 member nations and the five countries agree on reducing approximately 50 percent of global CO2 emissions by 2050, further promote fundamental international research on climate change and low carbon technologies, establish a strategy for developing and introducing green technologies for a low carbon society, and cooperate with one another regarding implementation.
