The first domestic cases of persons infected with influenza A (H1N1) were confirmed on May 16. In response to the subsequent increase in the number of infected persons, Prime Minister Taro Aso held the 3rd meeting of the Headquarters for Countermeasures against Influenza A (H1N1) at the Prime Minister's Office on May 18.

At the meeting, the members of the Headquarters shared understanding on the state of influenza A (H1N1) infection and measures to prevent the spread of further infection. They also confirmed measures to be taken going forward.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Aso said, "I call on the Japanese people to maintain their composure. On their part, I ask the Cabinet members to make the utmost efforts to ensure the safety and peace of mind of the people, by continuing to provide timely and pertinent information to the public so as for them to be precautious while maintaining their composure."
