During the talks, the leaders confirmed that Japan and Russia would construct relations as strategically important partners, agreeing on the importance of the resolution of the territorial issue in the Asia and Pacific region and the economic and practical cooperation in the Far East of Russia and Eastern Siberia and other regions.
After the talks, the leaders attended a signing ceremony, in which they confirmed the signing of documents, including the Treaty between Japan and the Russian Federation on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, the Japan-Russia Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, and the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Russian Federation Regarding Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters.
In the joint press conference, Prime Minister Aso said, "Chairman Putin's visit to Japan, I believe, reflects the interest by the Russian leadership which seeks to raise Japan-Russia relations in the Asia and Pacific region to a higher level. I am satisfied that we were able to have extremely frank and sincere discussions today."
