A patrol vessel and aircraft parade took place, and there were maritime salvage drills on the sea during the ceremony held as part of events to commemorate the Day of Maritime Safety, which is May 12. A total of 2,000 people invited from the public, in addition to people concerned, boarded a patrol vessel and enjoyed the rare occasion to observe the Japan Coast Guard's operations.
After a ceremony to board the vessel, Prime Minister Aso, on the patrol vessel Yashima, observed lifesaving drills, and drills to track and capture a vessel suspected to be engaged in smuggling. The Prime Minister then delivered an address to officials of the Japan Coast Guard.
After delivering the address, Prime Minister Aso answered questions from reporters. Asked about his impressions on the ceremony and comprehensive drills, the Prime Minister said, "I frankly felt that the very fact that the Japan Coast Guard was capable of exercising comprehensive drills of this scale is proof that they engage in their daily activities diligently."
