Prime Minister Taro Aso held the 1st meeting of the Council for the Realization of a Reassuring Society at the Prime Minister's Office.

The Council was established with the aim of discussing the direction that Japan as a nation should pursue and modalities of basic policy, in order to realize a society in which the people can live their lives with peace of mind, in light of changes of the environment, such as the changes in economic and employment structures of Japan and the dwindling birthrate and aging population.

In the opening address, Prime Minister Aso said, "I have been saying that Japan should seek to realize a reassuring society. I want the Council to discuss an image of the nation that Japan is to realize, without limiting the scope of discussions to specific policies and measures. I would like the Council to identify the path that will lead Japan to a reassuring society." The Prime Minister confirmed the operational procedures of the Council and exchanged views with the experts in attendance.
