In his address, Prime Minister Aso said, "Last year marked the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Japan, as well as the 80th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Venezuela. The President's visit took place at a truly opportune time as the momentum is increasing for further strengthening the relationship between our countries. I would like to express my welcome once again." In response, President Chaves thanked Japan for accepting his visit at short notice, and expressed his intention to build strong relations with Japan centered on the areas of oil and natural gas.
At the meeting, the two leaders agreed to further strengthen cooperation in the area of energy. In particular, they agreed to establish a working group for considering the feasibility of developing the Orinoco oil fields and gas fields in Venezuela and the provision of funds, in order to promote substantial bilateral cooperation in the area of energy. In addition, Prime Minister Aso proposed establishing a venue for public-private dialogue toward developing a favorable environment for bilateral economic activities, to which President Chaves expressed his agreement.
