Prime Minister Taro Aso held a meeting of the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy at the Prime Minister's Office. At the meeting, discussions took place on the comprehensive reform of social security, tax and fiscal administrations as well as on the Basic Principles of the FY2009 Budget Formulation.

At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Aso reported on the Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy recently held in Washington, DC, in the United States of America. He requested that due discussions be made at the Council, saying, "We must turn the Summit decisions into concrete actions." Furthermore, the Prime Minister reported to the Council that he had conveyed to the relevant Cabinet members policies on the assessment of personnel capacity@and organization of administrative bodies for FY2009 and the FY 2009 budget formulation, respectively. He said, "I ask the Council to have vigorous discussions based on the policies I have just outlined."
