Prime Minister Aso said, "I believe that the refueling activities represent what Japan contributes as a member of the international community, as well as what other countries expect of us. By carrying out the refueling activities, which benefit Japan as well, our nation has been acting in its national interest. It goes without saying that international terrorists can target Japan specifically, not only the world in general. Given this situation, it is inconceivable for Japan alone to withdraw from the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan."
Furthermore, on the question about the summit meeting on finance and the global economy for which he will depart today, the Prime Minister said, "We need to consider various things, including the modality of rating agencies and accounting standards. Discussion is needed among world leaders on the issue of financial settlement, as well as on medium- and long-term issues."
