Prime Minister Taro Aso held the 30th meeting of the Council for Gender Equality at the Prime Minister's Office.

At this first Council meeting after the inauguration of the Aso Cabinet, discussions took place on efforts to facilitate women's participation in the Government's policy decision-making process and on a final report on the "modality of measures to promote gender equality in the regions."

In his opening address, Prime Minister Aso said, "Things have changed significantly in Japan. There is no doubt that ever more women are making great achievements in various fields than in the past. Still, when talented people's abilities are not utilized, it is a great loss of human capital in the economy. In that sense, the active roles of women and older persons mean a lot."
