Prime Minister Taro Aso attended the House of Representatives' Special Committee on Prevention of International Terrorism and Japan's Cooperation and Support; Humanitarian Assistance for Reconstruction in Iraq, and answered questions posed by Committee members on the Replenishment Support Special Measures Bill and the Special Measures Bill on Supporting Afghan Reconstruction.
Prime Minister Aso said, "Japan has been carrying out the refueling activities for the sake of its national interest, among other purposes. That is what I believe. Therefore, it goes without saying that the operation must be continued by all means. The fight against terrorism has been continuing since the September 11 attacks in 2001, in which Japanese nationals were among those who lost their lives. Given that fact, and considering that in Afghanistan other countries are reinforcing their troops fighting terrorism, it is inconceivable for Japan alone to withdraw from the region. That is my basic stance. Our fight against terrorism is still ongoing. We absolutely must continue the replenishment activities, which are highly appreciated by the international community."
