Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Dr. Angela Merkel, the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

To start with, Prime Minister Abe greeted the Chancellor, referring to Japan's hot weather by saying, "It has been particularly hot in Japan this year but today it feels cooler than before. I assume this coolness has been brought about with the arrival of Chancellor Merkel, who has been actively tackling climate change issues."

During the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said that he would like to push Japan to fulfill the important contributions expected of it by the international community in the fight against terrorism while seeking to gain the understanding of the opposition parties on the Anti-Terrorism Special Measures Law. Chancellor Merkel in response indicated that Germany appreciated Japan's will to continue its contribution. Concerning the global warming issue, the two leaders agreed on the need to build a framework in which all major emitters, such as the United States, India and China, participate. The two leaders furthermore exchanged opinions on cooperation at the United Nations and energy issues.

At the joint press conference after the meeting, the leaders indicated that the increasingly close ties between Japan and Germany were symbolized by the three summit meetings that the two countries had held thus far this year. The two countries agreed on the stance of further maintaining their good partnership as they shift the chairmanship of the G8 Summit this year from Germany, the chair of latest summit, to Japan, which will chair the Hokkaido Toyako Summit next year.
