Prime Minister Meets with Representatives of Organizations of Victims of the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Hiroshima City and met with representatives of organizations of victims of the atomic bomb at a hotel in the city. At the beginning, Prime Minister Abe said, "I would like to express my heartfelt respect to all of you who have remarkably completed the reconstruction of Hiroshima following ceaseless efforts to restore the city that had been reduced to ruins by the atomic bombing. It is our responsibility to deeply engrave in our minds the tragedy and calamity left by the atomic bombs and firmly convey them to our future generations. I pledge that Japan, as the only country ever to have experienced nuclear devastation, will play a role in achieving the total elimination of nuclear weapons and in the realization of a permanent peace." Mr. Sunao Tsuboi, the Director-General of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-Bomb Sufferers Organizations made a request, saying, "We must clear away the problems that could lead to nuclear war, and in this endeavor we would like you to exercise your full power as Prime Minister. In that, the Three Non-Nuclear Principles must be adhered to by all means." Prime Minister Abe and the representatives then discussed the situations of people suffering from aftereffects of the atomic bombs. Prime Minister Abe said, "The government will continue to enhance its measures covering health, medical care, and welfare for those victims suffering from aftereffects of the atomic bombs." Prime Minister Abe further expressed his plan to consider a review on the system of recognizing atomic bomb diseases upon consultation with experts.
