Awards Ceremony to Present the Prime Minister's Commendations on Contributors to Public Safety
Monday, July 2, 2007
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted an annual ceremony at the Prime Minister's Official Residence to commend individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to public safety. The commendations for contributors to public safety are presented to recognize their great achievements in preventing the outbreak of disasters that could threaten daily life, such as industrial disasters, traffic accidents and fires. The awards ceremony is held every year as a tribute to National Public Safety Day, which is July 1. At this year's awards ceremony, 25 individuals and organizations were presented with commendations on their achievements in such areas as traffic safety, school safety, industrial safety, fire prevention and nuclear safety.
After conferring the awards, Prime Minister Abe offered his words of congratulations by saying, "All of you make tremendous efforts every day for our public safety in each of your regions and in your own capacities. And yet, 40,000 people lose their lives each year in unforeseen accidents. Although the number of traffic accidents has decreased substantially, a sudden accident is a terrible thing for the people involved, and for their families as well. It is essential to make steady, daily efforts to prevent such accidents from occurring as much as possible. Needless to say, the national and prefectural governments will take every possible measure to ensure the public safety, and the cooperation of the public is indispensable for such an endeavor. Now, having received this award, I hope for your continued and even further strengthened efforts for the safety of the people of this country."
At the end of the ceremony, Ms. Nobuko Yoshioka, the Chair of the Liaison Council of Ladies' Fire Clubs in Okayama Prefecture, delivered an address of gratitude on behalf of the awardees, stating, "We vow to work even harder to ensure the safety of our local communities."
