Debriefing Session for the G8 Summit 2007 Heiligendamm on the Global Warming Issue
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe participated in a debriefing session for the G8 Summit 2007 Heiligendamm on the global warming issue co-hosted by the Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. There Prime Minister Abe briefed attendees on "Cool Earth 50," the long-term strategy Japan proposed at the Summit, as well as on the discussions based on this strategy that took place among the G8 leaders and the process leading to the agreement. He also spoke about his thoughts for next year's G8 Summit to be held in Toyako, Hokkaido. Prime Minister Abe urged the people to take part in initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, calling on each individual to reduce CO2 emissions by one kilogram per day and to spread good ideas by participating in the campaign "We Want Your Ideas for Cutting CO2 Emissions." In closing, Prime Minister Abe expressed his hopes for the upcoming G8 Summit in Toyako, saying that "Based on the agreement reached at the latest Summit, I want to make the next one an event with even greater impetus." The Prime Minister also said, "We will designate the one-year period through the opening of the next Summit as the Summit Year and hold an event on July 7 this year to mark a year before the opening of the Summit."
