Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the radiation treatment facility at the University of Tokyo Hospital, following the Cabinet decision on June 15 on the Basic Plan to Promote Countermeasures for Cancer.

Key challenges identified in the Basic Plan to Promote Countermeasures for Cancer include the promotion of radiation treatment and chemical therapy, as well as the fostering of doctors to specialize in these fields. The Plan seeks to realize "a society in which people, including cancer patients, can know cancer and face it, and never give in."

After concluding his visit to the state-of-the-art radiation medical treatment facility, Prime Minister Abe commented, "I once came to the University of Tokyo Hospital years ago, and it seems that the hospital has been attractively modernized since then. I had that chance today to see for myself the machines that are being used in the latest radiation treatment. When the experts explained that these machines are virtually free of heat or pain, I realized that my understanding of radiation treatment had been based on inaccurate preconceptions." He then spoke on the future of cancer treatment, saying, "Our New Health Frontier Strategy regards cancer treatment and countermeasures as a key issue. I will make sure to tackle the issue and secure the budgets needed for the promotion of such efforts."
