Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Ms. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the President of the Republic of the Philippines, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe referred to his visit to the Philippines in December last year. He spoke of his gratitude, noting that "Welcomed with warm hospitality, my wife and I had a very pleasant time there," and went on to say, "Based on the Joint Statement I have signed with President Arroyo, I would like to further develop our relations as partners for comprehensive cooperation."
In response, President Arroyo said, "I would like Japan as an open country to play a large role from now on. I hope this role will be played not only in terms of regional economic integration, but also to ensure peace, security and stability."
