Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from the Japan Prize laureates for 2007, the 23rd year of the awards, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence and talked with them.

The Japan Prize is awarded to people from all over the world who have made original and outstanding achievements in science and technology and therefore contributed to their progress, and also serve the cause of peace and prosperity for humankind.

The three Japan Prize laureates for 2007 paid a courtesy call with their wives. Two of them were awarded in the prize category of Innovative Devices Inspired by Basic Research for their achievement in the discovery of Giant Magneto-Resistance (GMR) and its contribution to development of innovative spin-electronics devices. The other laureate was awarded in the prize category of Science and Technology of Harmonious Co-Existence for his contribution to the conservation of tropical forest.

While talking with the laureates, Prime Minister Abe said, "Preserving beautiful forests in Japan is one of the challenges I have tasked my administration with working on. Also, an ongoing loss of rain forests in Asia is a matter of grave concern. Japan will continue assisting in the preservation of these natural assets."
