Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Nuri Al-Maliki, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said, "Japan-Iraq relations are extremely important to the stability of the Middle East region and the international community, and are also crucial to Japan's national interest. Japan has been assisting Iraq's reconstruction through such means as the dispatch of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and Official Development Assistance (ODA). I intend to continue assisting Prime Minister Maliki's reconstruction efforts." In response, Prime Minister Maliki said, "I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude once again for all the assistance extended by Japan, which we perceive as a true symbol of our friendship and as an important foundation for strengthening our bilateral relations. Iraq is now trying to break from various aspects of the past. I will strive to lead Iraq to overcome our difficulties and realize our potential to the fullest extent possible."
In addition to bilateral relations, the two leaders discussed issues including the United Nations Security Council reform. Prime Minister Maliki expressed his support for Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the Security Council.
