Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the 1st meeting of the Decentralization Reform Committee, held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

As one of the top priority tasks for the Abe Cabinet, decentralization must be addressed by the entire government to pursue relevant reform. To this end, a headquarters for promoting decentralization reform, to be chaired by Prime Minister Abe himself, will be established with the aim of submitting a new package of bills for decentralization to the Diet within the next three years. With this in mind, Prime Minister Abe requested the committee to compile a "Basic Approach" to decentralization reform by the end of May and an interim report in the autumn.

In his address, Prime Minister Abe requested that the committee hold active discussions, saying, "In order to create a beautiful country, Japan, we need a bold, fundamental review of the Japan's basic post-war framework, which has failed to keep up with the major changes of the 21st century. The relationship between the central and local governments is part of our agenda for review. In order to draw upon the motivation, wisdom, and ingenuity of regions, it is essential to develop a system that enables regions to explore ideas and execute them, for it is the regions that best know the needs of their people. To reach this goal, we need to clarify the roles to be played by the central and local governments in each administrative segment."
