Japan-Liberia Summit Meeting

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, the President of the Republic of Liberia, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said that he would spare no support for the consolidation of peace in Liberia, which had gone through years of civil war. In particular, he announced a plan to offer Liberia a number of new aid packages through international organizations, including about 2.26 million dollars for former child soldiers and victims of sexual exploitation and violence, about 1.8 million dollars in food aid, and about 2.5 million dollars to support the return of Liberian refugees. Prime Minister Abe said that Japan would continue its support for Liberia's good governance, national reconciliation, and efforts to reconstruct the country. In return, President Sirleaf expressed her deep gratitude for the assistance Japan had extended thus far and its newly announced plans of further assistance for Liberia's commitment to the consolidation of peace. The two leaders confirmed that they would continuously coordinate and cooperate with each other on the United Nations (UN) Security Council reform and North Korea issues. President Sirleaf further said that the support Liberia had expressed last year for the UN resolution on the situation of human rights in North Korea conformed to the principles of human dignity and honor that her country observes and that Liberia's position on this matter would remain unchanged in the future.
