Japan-Mongolia Summit Meeting Monday, February 26, 2007 JAPANESE

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Nambaryn Enkhbayar, the President of Mongolia at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. At the beginning, Prime Minister Abe expressed his gratitude to Mongolia for withdrawing its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council in the 2008 election and expressing its willingness to let Japan have the seat instead, saying, "I cordially welcome your visit to Japan. I would like to thank you once again for the sign of friendship and goodwill that Mongolia has shown with respect to its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. Many of the people of Japan are also grateful to Mongolia." During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to government and private sector economic cooperation and economic exchanges between their two countries, and cooperation on North Korea issues, and signed the Japan-Mongolia Joint Statement and the Japan-Mongolia Basic Action Plan for the Next 10 Years. Afterwards, the two leaders moved to the Prime Minister's Residential Quarters to have a commemorative photograph of Prime Minister and Mrs. Abe and President Enkhbayar and Mrs. Onongiin Tsolmon taken, and then Prime Minister and Mrs. Abe hosted a dinner for the visiting President and First Lady. On the following day, February 27, President Enkhbayar gave a speech to the Diet.
