Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the 1st meeting of the Council for Regulatory Reform at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

The Council is to work in response to requests from the Prime Minister, aiming to study and deliberate on the basic issues concerning the reform of the modality of regulations necessary to advance structural reform of society and the economy (including the modality of regulations to open the clerical and other work of the central and local governments to the private sector). The Council is also to study and deliberate on important issues concerning adjustments by administrative organizations with regard to the handling of complaints about the issue of market-opening.

In his address, Prime Minister Abe said, "While we need to alleviate and abolish boldly and promptly those regulations that inhibit economic growth, in some cases we need to improve rules to ensure the stability of the Japanese people's lives. Therefore I would like the Council to thoroughly study the impacts and effects of regulations. We have already been working considerably for regulatory reform. What is still left to us are the difficult tasks, such as drilling through the hard bedrock of the regulations. I would appreciate your further endeavors to this end." Prime Minister Abe then made a consultation request to Mr. Takao Kusakari, the President of the Council.
