Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from the members of Japan's national team for the Deaflympics, an international sports event for hearing-impaired persons. The 16th Winter Deaflympics will be held in the Salt Lake City area in the United States from February 1 to February 10 and will feature five sporting disciplines: alpine skiing, snowboard, cross country skiing, ice hockey and curling.

At the beginning, Prime Minister Abe greeted the athletes by saying in sign language, "Hello everyone. I am Prime Minister Abe. Thank you for coming today."

Afterwards, he wrote the following words of support on a Japanese flag: "I hope you do well. Go Japan! Shinzo Abe" and once again communicated in sign language, encouraging the athletes with the message, "Please do your best to win a medal."
