Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting of the Council of Related Ministers for the Realization of Japan as a Country Built on Tourism at the Prime Minister's Official Residence. The discussion focused on the current progress of measures promoting the initiative to realize a country built on tourism, as well as the compilation of a basic plan to promote the initiative to realize a country built on tourism.

In his address, Prime Minister Abe said, "Tourism is a symbol representing the stability and fulfillment of people's lives and international peace. Tourism is also significant in various ways, such as contributing to the vitalization of local communities and enhancing the international exchange through mutual understanding. Thus I recognize tourism as highly important in promoting the creation of 'a beautiful country, Japan,' an initiative sought by my Cabinet. Data indicates that over 7.3 million foreign tourists visited Japan last year, an increase of over two million people since the inauguration of the Visit Japan Campaign in 2003... Toward the goal of realizing 'a beautiful country, Japan,' I would like the Council to strive even harder to progress measures promoting the initiative to realize a country built on tourism."

After the meeting, Ms. Yoshino Kimura, an actress and the Goodwill Ambassador who promotes campaigns to attract foreign tourists to Japan, visited the Prime Minister's Official Residence to hold talks with Prime Minister Abe.
