Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in London, the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), as the first stop in a tour combining a visit to Europe and participation in the East Asia Summit (EAS) and other events.

After arriving in London, Prime Minister Abe visited 10 Downing Street and held a meeting with Mr. Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of the UK.

During the meeting, the two leaders agreed to enhance bilateral relations as strategic partners. They also announced a joint statement in which they committed themselves to meeting annually.

The two leaders further agreed to cooperate on assistance for the reconstruction of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as North Korea's nuclear, missile and abduction issues. Prime Minister Blair also expressed his continued support for Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

After the meeting, Prime Minister Abe received courtesy calls from Mr. James Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Mr. David Cameron, the Leader of the Conservative Party.
