Prime Minister Shinzo Abe invited Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mrs. Singh, the Prime Minister and the First Lady of India, to a welcome ceremony in the South Garden of the Prime Minister's Official Residence on their visit to Japan as official guests. It was the first occasion on which a welcome ceremony for official guests had been held in the South Garden of the Prime Minister's Official Residence.

After the national anthems of both countries were played by a wind orchestra, Prime Minister Abe, along with Prime Minister Singh, received the salute of a guard of honor. Following the introduction of India's official cortege, Japan's Cabinet members, and others, the two leaders shook hands with children from an Indian international school in Japan and a local primary school who had come to welcome Prime Minister Singh.

After the welcome ceremony, Prime Minister Singh delivered a speech at the Diet. On December 15, Prime Minister Abe is scheduled to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Singh at the Prime Minister's Official Residence and afterwards host a dinner with Mrs. Abe for the visiting Prime Minister and First Lady.
