Prime Minister Shinzo Abe received a courtesy call from Mr. Keiichi Inamine, the Governor of Okinawa Prefecture and Mr. Hirokazu Nakaima, winner of the recent gubernatorial election, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe congratulated Mr. Nakaima on his victory in the election and all three exchanged a firm handshake.
Afterwards, Prime Minister Abe said, "I hear that voter turnout for the gubernatorial election was quite high. This illustrates how seriously the people of Okinawa Prefecture are thinking about the future of Okinawa. We in the central government also intend to work hard to revitalize Okinawa. Okinawa is the region of Japan that is most open to Asia and the world, and it is full of potential. I want Okinawa to make the most of its unique advantages."
In response, Governor Inamine said, "The governor of Okinawa must consider the interests of the nation and at the same time wants to protect the interests of Okinawa Prefecture and everyone living there. It is an extremely challenging position to be in. Based upon the experience he has accumulated to date, I want Mr. Nakaima to adopt the approach as governor of holding thorough discussions with the central government." Mr. Nakaima said, "I am determined to work hard to uphold my many campaign pledges. I ask you for your support in this endeavor."
