Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended the 1st meeting of the Eminent Persons' Council on the New Health Frontier Strategy at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
The Council was established to promote the programs of the New Health Frontier Strategy, "under which the policy focus will be transferred to prevention and the aim will be to extend healthy life expectancy," as Prime Minister Abe announced in his policy speech. The Council is to focus on two major pillars. One is extension of the healthy life expectancy of the Japanese people through a commitment to maintaining health based on prevention measures taken by individuals according to their own circumstances. The other pillar is application of innovation in assisting those with an illness or disability to fully harness their potential. The Council is comprised of a group of intellectuals headed by Mr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, the Chair of the Council, and relevant Cabinet members.
At the start of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe addressed to the Council, saying, "I would like you to draw on your knowledge and expertise so that every Japanese person can lead a healthy life that allows them to enjoy life to the last moment. These efforts will also lead to the realization of a vitalized society in the face of the decreasing birthrate and the ageing of society." Afterwards, the Council confirmed the procedures of the meeting and exchanged opinions, with a view to creating a new strategy by the end of the current fiscal year.
