On the morning of the first day of the 14th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a series of meetings with Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of the People's Republic of China, Mr. John Howard, the Prime Minister of Australia, and Mr. George W. Bush, the President of the United States of America. At the meetings, the leaders discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, the North Korea issues, and other issues. Prime Minister Abe then held a trilateral summit with Mr. Roh Moo Hyun, the President of South Korea, and President Bush, and the three leaders affirmed that they would make cooperative efforts to resolve the North Korea issues.

In the afternoon, the APEC Economic Leaders' Retreat I was held and economic issues such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) and studies into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) for the Asia-Pacific region were at the heart of this day's discussions.

Afterwards, Prime Minister Abe participated in a dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), and held meetings with President Roh and Mr. Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation, respectively. With President Putin, Prime Minister Abe discussed the Northern Territories issue and cooperation in the areas of fisheries and public order.

Prime Minister Abe and Mrs. Abe attended the Gala Dinner and Cultural Performance held that evening and deepened friendly relationships with the world leaders.
