Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Paul Kagame, the President of the Republic of Rwanda, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said, "I cordially welcome the visit to Japan by the President. I highly appreciate the leadership demonstrated by President Kagame to overcome the tragedy of genocide and work toward the establishment of peace." In return, President Kagame congratulated Prime Minister Abe on his assumption of office. President Kagame then indicated his continued commitment to establishing peace.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations, specifically assistance activities through such organizations as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) office in Rwanda opened in August last year, the Japan Overseas Cooperative Association (JOCA), and the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). In the realm of international relations, the two leaders discussed such issues as North Korea and United Nations Security Council reform.
At the dinner held afterwards, President Kagame indicated his support for Dr. Shigeru Omi, who was a candidate the election of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Prime Minister Abe expressed his appreciation for this comment.
