Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a meeting with Mr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, at the Prime Minister's Official Residence.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Abe said, "President Kikwete, I strongly appreciate the fact that since you came into office you have worked on democratization and social and economic reforms in Tanzania, contributing to the consolidation of peace in the African region." President Kikwete, in response to this comment, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I am grateful for the assistance provided by Japan to Tanzania. I chose Japan as the first destination on my visit to Asia in order to strengthen the relations between our two countries further. I am grateful for your hospitality."
Afterwards, in addition to bilateral relations, the two leaders also discussed reform of the United Nations Security Council and the issue of the nuclear test by North Korea. President Kikwete said that he supported Japan's position on these issues, for which statement Prime Minister Abe expressed his gratitude.
At the dinner held after the summit meeting, the two leaders talked about topics such as the beautiful natural landscape in Tanzania, most famously Mount Kilimanjaro, and the deeply interesting animal ecology of the wildlife reserves. The conversation was held in a convivial atmosphere, and deepened the friendship between the two countries.
