Prime Minister Shinzo Abe left on the government plane from Haneda Airport on the morning of October 8 (Japan time: morning of the same day) to visit China (People's Republic of China) and South Korea (Republic of Korea). He arrived in Beijing, the capital of China and the first destination of his visit, on the afternoon of the same day.
After attending a welcome ceremony at the square in front of the East Gate of the People's Congress Hall, Prime Minister Abe held talks with Mr. Wen Jiabao, the Premier of China, and with Mr. Hu Jintao, the President of China, respectively. After holding talks with Mr. Wu Bangguo, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Prime Minister Abe attended a press conference in which he said, "I decided upon China as the first country to visit after assuming the office of Prime Minister with the aim of building relations with the leaders of China, an important neighboring country of Japan, that will enable us to frankly discuss the future of our countries. My visit also aims to strengthen the bonds of trust to open up the future of Japan-China relations. On the Chinese side, President Hu Jintao, Chairman Wu Bangguo, and Premier Wen Jiabao have spared time to hold talks with me, despite their very hard schedules coinciding with the holding of the first day of the sixth plenary session of the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). I would like to express my gratitude for this respect. I have talked heart-to-heart with the three leaders about the future of our countries and we all agreed that it is the responsibility of both countries to contribute constructively to the peace and prosperity of Asia and the world." On the early morning of October 9, Prime Minister Abe left Beijing Airport to visit South Korea.
