Prime Minister Meets with Family Members of the Abductees

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Mr. Shigeru Yokota and other family members of the abductees for the first time since taking office as Prime Minister, joined by Cabinet members including Mr. Yasuhisa Shiozaki, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, and Ms. Kyoko Nakayama, the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister.

Immediately after the inauguration of the Abe Cabinet, discussions took place on measures concerning the abduction issue and it was decided at the Cabinet meeting on this day to establish the Headquarters on the Abduction Issue in order to advance comprehensive measures, including taking strategic steps to deal with this issue, as well as developing measures for a full account of the abductees whose whereabouts remain unknown, the immediate return of the surviving abductees, and the handover of the suspects in the abduction cases. The Headquarters will be composed of all Cabinet members, wherein Prime Minister Abe will serve as Chair and Chief Cabinet Secretary Shiozaki as Deputy Chair.

At the meeting with the family members, Prime Minister Abe explained how the Abe Cabinet intends to deal with the abduction issue, and stated his resolve to establish a thorough system to resolve this longstanding issue at an early date.

In response, the family member's side also requested the early resolution of the issue.
