Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Results of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Election and Other Matters
July 5, 2021
[Provisional Translation]
(On the results of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election)
First of all, I would like to humbly accept the fact that we failed to win the majority of seats by the coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito, even though we promised the residents of Tokyo to do so in the election campaign.
Meanwhile, compared to the last election, the LDP gained eight more seats and became the largest party in the assembly. We at the LDP intend to make all-out efforts to fulfill our responsibility to improve the metropolitan government’s policies and to serve the people of Tokyo.
I believe that there are various factors behind the elections results, but we would like to start with thoroughly analyzing them in a cool-headed manner, but with a sense of alarm, and prepare for the next elections, in collaboration between the LDP Headquarters and the Federation of Tokyo Metropolitan LDP Branches.
(On parties calling for holding the Tokyo Olympic Games without spectators or cancelling the Games increasing their seats)
We have decided since before that we will finalize our course of action in a five-member consultation among the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, or the host of the Games, the Government, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Regardless of the results of the election, we have already fixed the schedule on it. At the same time, we need to quickly make a decision on priority measures to prevent the spread of disease as well, keeping the overall situation in mind.
