Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Resignation of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee President

February 12, 2021

[Provisional Translation]
(On the resignation of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee President Mori and other matters)

I believe Mr. Mori expressed his intention to resign after giving the matter deep consideration on his own. I expect that the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee will choose the new president in a transparent manner, based on relevant rules.

The Government of Japan has high expectations that the committee will as soon as possible rebuild itself as a renewed organization welcomed by the Japanese people and people around the world. We will make all-out efforts to ensure a safe and secure Games.

(On former Committee President Mori's successor)

I myself believe that the decision must be welcomed by the citizens and it must be made based on rules and transparency. I haven't spoken with Mr. Kawabuchi.

(On former Committee President Mori's successor)

As I just mentioned, the Organising Committee will decide on the succeeding president in a transparent manner, based on relevant rules. It is important that the committee make that decision in such a manner, in line with procedures the citizens can accept. Nothing has been decided beyond that.

(On the Prime Minister's alleged message to former Committee President Mori)

I firmly conveyed to him that it is critical to have an organization and decision-making process that is welcomed by the public. That is what I conveyed to him.

(On the consistency with the Prime Minister's response at the Diet)

That is totally different. As I am the Supreme Advisor to the Organising Committee, I believe I should comment on the decision-making to say that the decision will be made with transparency, based on the relevant rules.

(On the period until former Committee President Mori resigns)

I have already responded to that point.

(On the approval of the vaccine)

That is something we truly must welcome. I will work diligently so that the citizens can get the vaccine as early as possible.
