Press Conference by the Prime Minister on the Sentencing of Dedendant KAWAI Anri

January 21, 2021

[Provisional Translation]

(On the sentencing of defendant KAWAI Anri)
It goes without saying that the head of government should not comment on the court’s decision regarding individual cases. It is imperative that politicians act in a proper and befitting manner so that they receive the trust of each and every citizen and are not a source of misgivings from the public.

(On disbursements from the LDP Headquarters to defendant Kawai)
I received reports on that matter after I became president of the Liberal Democratic Party. The party reported to me that disbursements were made in accordance with the rules once prescribed party procedures were completed.

(On disbursements from the LDP Headquarters to defendant Kawai (additional question))
The party reported me that the disbursements were made after procedures were completed within the party.
