On July 7, 2021, the Prime Minister attended the Policy Roundtable of the Government and Ruling Parties at the Prime Minister’s Office.

At the meeting, the participants engaged in discussions on the guidelines for FY2022 budget requests.

Following the discussion, the Prime Minister said,

“The Government will continue to give top priority to its response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). We will thoroughly carry out preventive measures against infection centered on dining and drinking, while proceeding with vaccinations, in order to contain COVID-19 at the earliest time possible.

Under these circumstances, the tax revenue for the last fiscal year reached a record high level. The Japanese economy is expected to see its GDP surpass the pre-COVID-19 level within this year, so we will ensure that this recovery trend in the economy will continue.

The FY2022 budget is an extremely important one that will lay the foundation of new growth. With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in mind, we will boldly prioritize certain budget items to undertake intensive investments in the four challenges, namely, green, digital, creating vibrant communities, and addressing the declining birth rate. To this end, we intend to review the budget for the previous fiscal year and establish a framework that allows for making requests regarding these priority issues flexibly in the guidelines for FY2022 budget requests.

At the same time, we will continue our existing efforts to improve government expenditures and steadily proceed toward realizing economic revitalization and fiscal soundness.

I would like to request the special cooperation of the leadership of the ruling parties and relevant ministers in this regard.”
